    Facebook - Accidentally Announcing Break-Ups

One bad feature on Facebook? The stupid status change feature. I hate it! I'm pretty sure I've got my status hidden now. Why? Because whenever I changed my status from "In a Relationship" to "Single" it announces it to all of my friends. And the worst part about it is that many of them will "Like" the change in status even if you don't particularly like it.

Have you ever changed your status on Facebook from "In a relationship" to "Single" and had people "Like" it? How did you feel about that?

Re: Facebook - Accidentally Announcing Break-Ups

I was not aware that the status was announced. I changed my status from married to single. I thought it was strange that I was getting all of these propositions. I was, totally, confused: What the heck is going on here?! How did I become so popular all of a sudden? These guys were friends from my hometown and college days. One guy decided to chat me. He was giving the "hard sell" as to why I should date him. I asked him, "What is up with you?" "Why are you doing this?" He told me that I announced that I was single, and he wanted to get it in before anyone else did. "Are you kidding me?!!" "Dude! I did no such thing!" He told me that a notice went out that I changed my relationship status. I told him that I was not dating and thanked him for the interest.

I had never been more embarrassed. I am not that forward! I decided to hide all of my personal information.

When it went from married to single, all I got was a bunch of questions or an I'm so sorry to hear that. Personally I could have done without the apology I was happy to be single, they could have liked it all they wanted because I liked it too.

Speaking as someone who has seen many people go from married to single. I always say I'm sorry because I usually don't know what led to the divorce. Plus, I find the demise of a marriage a little sad, even if he/she was a bastid.

The only thing that annoys me are the people who switch from in a relationship to single and back again, like 3 times a month. These morons haven't even met usually, it's all online. SMH!

Re: Facebook - Accidentally Announcing Break-Ups

I have my status hidden on my Facebook page, and I will continue to keep it that way. The reason I do it is because I don't want or need people asking me all kinds of questions about my "personal" life, I get asked enough, why I'm not married yet etc etc, and after a while, it will drive a person insane! Plus I have seen people change their status weekly, I don't know if they do it for attention or what, but it's crazy how people are. If someone happens to break up with somebody, then they are like a

I'm sorry, and then they start asking questions, and to me that's personal. I feel if I'm not going to date you or have a relationship with you then YOU don't need to know about why and how the relationship ended, I'm not going to give a personal interview on Facebook. A man or woman doesn't need to explain their breakup to people. I have seen some people even say they "like" the fact that this person is now single.

Facebook is really annoying with the way they handle all of their privacy features -- especially the fact they continually screw with them, and then you have to keep going back in and resetting them.

The one thing I wish they'd do (and haven't yet, to my knowledge) is let people create "levels" of friends. I wish it was possible to call one person an "acquaintance" and another a real "friend." Then I could set higher privacy settings for the acquaintances. There's things you don't mind your best friends knowing, but that you don't necessarily want broadcast to your third grade teacher or the Starbucks barista you just met.

It's funny that you post this, I had a similar situation. I have decided to leave my husband, I scrubbed is pics from my profile and I cleared my relationship status. Which means I took away 'married' and it's now blank, no relationship status posted. Well imagine my surprise when I see a thing stating "drea is no longer listed as being married"! I immediately deleted the msg and hoped that no one saw it lol! We will still be living in the same house until summer and have not yet really told everyone what's going on. I am friends with many of his relatives and I DID NOT want them to find out that way. And yeah FB gets too carried away with thinking everyone wants to always know what you are doing at all times. I do not and most people I know do not care to know such things. If you want it that way, you should go Twitter. I'm just saying...

I have my friends in lists, Pale Male. Then I assign each list certain privacy settings. My family can see everything. My REAL friends (and many of my virtual real friends) can see most things and my gamer friends can see very little. Everyone can see my big head pictures though... LOL. But I don't want everyone to know who my children are or any of my other relatives.

Well I wasn't mean about it, I knew they meant well. But really they could come by and said 'wow you look great' because after it was after I looked better than I had in years. LOL.

Personally everyone on my facebook are people I know really well, I'm super picky about who I friend up. People's post can get a little insane and I don't want my spirit being influenced by people's mess.
