    Long-term Separation, WHY??!

    I understand that there are a multitude of logical reasons for a marriage to end and for people to get divorced.

    What I don't understand is why do people separate and live apart, sometimes for decades, yet don't divorce? Are there really that many devout Catholics left?

    What I find particularly disturbing is when both parties move on and shack up with someone new, but nobody changes the beneficiary on their life insurance or pension plan.

    Yeah, that's pretty strange. I guess these are folks that figure on some level they're never, ever, ever going to get married again, so why bother with the legal divorce? Maybe that's it? I dunno. It sure is a common plot cliche in TV shows and movies though; that non-divorce always comes back to bite 'em in the ass.

    I'm Catholic. Well, a bad one, anyway. And I doubt leaving your spouse without filing divorce "counts" as far as the Pope is concerned. To be Vatican-compliant, I think you gotta stay and suffer. LOLOL

    I am catholic and nope I am not that devout... yikes crazy... i am devout but i dont believe in forcing people to stay together or people who are not togethering just being together on papper..double yikes

    You can get a civil divorce and/or live apart and still be in communion with the church and eligible for the Euchrist. You can not have a girlfriend/boyfriend or think about having one. You would be guilty of coveting for thinking about it and adultry if you do it. Absolution is available but only if you are resolved to never think about or have a significant other again. The one out is if you make a sizable donation to the parish, diocese and Vatican. Then you will receive an annulment. Though this has a downside, an annulment has the effect of making it as if the marriage never occured, any offspring are instantly bastards.

    Therefore I am now an Episcopalian and the German guy in the funny hat can kiss my Protestant asp.
    Idiots are a dime a dozen and if I ever find the guy supplying the dimes there's going to be a murder!
