So this guy vanished from your life without a word, then moved in instantly with this other woman, then reconnected with you with a request to play games on Facebook?

I wasn't gonna say anything but yeah, what's up with that? I have fallen in lust at first site, I've even had a one night stand or two back in the day. BUT it never occurred to me to have the guy move in with me. Who does that?!?

On a different note (putting on my geek hat) - do not trust all your important stuff to a portable hard drive (or the geek squad for that matter, way overpriced for the simplest things).

3-2-1 - 3 backups, 2 medium, 1 off-site

All of my important stuff is kept on a raided drive array (a Drobo, overkill for backups but I also have my 1.4Tb iTunes Library on it).

Some simple offsite solutions are Dropbox (up to 2Gb free, $9.99/month for 50Gb), but I actually have that beast of a library and all my other important stuff, like my photo library, resumés, tax returns, etc. backed up to a cloud solution called CrashPlan (~$5/month-to-month lower if you pre-pay a year or more), it took about a month and a half for it to upload everything but now that it's up it only takes a short time to sync the files.

Now that I know what a cloud solution is I kinda don't trust them. Are they really safe?

As a backup? Yes, but for the same reason I wouldn't trust just using a USB drive, I wouldn't store anything just on the cloud. If I laid out exactly how I have everything setup on my home desktop (iMac) and handle backing up my work iMac and laptop to it you'd probably go cross-eyed. Let's just say that I am comfortable that if my place burned down (knock on wood) I could quickly and easily get everything restored.

I should mention that you don't have to use CrashPlan's paid service, you can also set it up to just backup to a friend's computer. All the data is encrypted, so unless they are a crypto tech with the NSA or a blackhat, they can't actually look at your files.

Again, keep in mind that I'm a Systems Designer/Admin - so I get paid to be paranoid about data protection and privacy.

I hear you, I need to take my head out of the sand. I am a far cry from being tech savvy and just switched from backing up to DVD's to the portable hard drive last fall.

Today I wrote to my ex boyfriend's baby's mama. LOL. He's my ex from a long long time ago. She contacted me via Facebook to warn me about him (she was actually a bit jealous but that's okay) because the woman hacked his FB account and saw that he wanted to fly down to see me and my kids. He and I have been friends since the age of 6. Anywho... Their little girl shares my name which is so freaking ironic! She and I used to write to each other in 2009. Today I wrote to her asking how she was doing...

Regarding your situation, I wouldn't waste another ounce of energy on this low life guy. He isn't even a good player if you ask me. He's more like one of the fake wannabe young fools. Do you think he's looking for older women to take care of him? I certainly do not mean that as an insult at all! Nothing's wrong with aging -- heck, we all do! It just seems to me like he is looking for a cougar type relationship where the older woman does for him and he does very little if anything in return.

I go onto Craigslist sometimes -- boredom -- and there are a lot of guys on there looking for easy meal tickets. Lots of women looking for that as well.

I'm gonna put on my amateur psychiatrist hat a moment: I think the problem is that although he was raised in a 2 parent home he is the 2nd of 5 children and the youngest was born with special needs. All his parents attention was just focused on keeping his youngest brother alive the first few years. Then all the stuff that goes with having a developmentally slow child, they just kinda forgot him and the others. I think that's why his sister is a bit of a slut as well. By 28 she had 4 children, by 4 different men the youngest was put up for adoption. Her mom has custody of the oldest 2.

Well, that explains a lot! My ex brother in law (youngest of 4) is a good guy. But he's always dating older women and I believe it is because he lacked the kind of love he wanted/needed growing up. All of the kids, in fact, have serious issues if you ask me. I look at my brother and I and I think to myself "My parents did pretty dayum well!" My brother went through all of his playa stuff while in the military -- almost got married while in there but dodged the bullet. Then when he got out he had some more fun for a few years until he decided he was ready to settle down. Now he's married with two kids and that man ain't goin' NO WHERE.

He and I both are rather good on our words when it comes to matters of the heart. I don't know how we learned that lesson from our parents but somehow we did. Perhaps it was the commitment my mother showed for my dad (23 yrs) even though she refused to marry him. Girl, I'm so off topic! LOL! Somebody ban me.

Sometimes the problem is that you need to find yourself before you can find someone else. Other times, it's just that life stinks. Maybe in your case it's some of both.

One thing I've learned to do when looking for love is to compare what I want and/or need in a woman to what I'm likely to find. If due to my current circumstances the odds aren't in my favor, I find it best to not look until they change. This requires patience and dealing with some loneliness, but it's less frustrating overall.
