    My girlfriend dumped me because I'm going to Afghanistan

    The title's pretty self-explanatory, my GF dumped me the day I joined this site. She didn't want to wait for me to get back. I feel horrible.

    Not everyone was built to be in a relationship with someone in the military. I remember at 16 sending a Dear John letter to my boyfriend while he was in bootcamp. When I was discharged from the Navy, I knew how it felt to be in the Mil. I was a good military wife but it was hard.

    Maybe she knew she would have to make the decision to end it and felt it better to do so now. Perhaps it is the fear of losing you. I know it hurts but if she isn't the right one, it was probably for the best.

    My oldest son's father will be in Afghanistan in a month. Be safe!

    I really appreciate all the support, I knew the toll that a deployment could take on a relationship, I just didn't think it would be over before I even left.

    Age and maturity also has a lot to do with this but I have seen some good relationships fail because deployments are so stressful and hard. And that is on both sides if the coin. My ex didn't trust me at all which made his deployments even more miserable. I couldn't leave the house because if I missed his call, that meant I was cheating on him. But he was a jerk...

    I know a career military man whose wife recently threw in the gloves because she was tired of him always being gone.

    Personally, I do not think this means a person is bad or unworthy. They just know what they want and what they don't want.

    You know what would be worse? Believing you had someone waiting at home for you when you actually didn't/don't. I think she did you a favor, Luke.
