Just wondering about a BW's complexion.

A question for the ladies. Do you think or do you find a BW's skin and complexion to be better or worse on average than your white sisters?

Odd question I know but I've been making a little impromtue and sereptitious study after looking at my bud's lovely, flawless face. For a 48 year old woman her skin is like silk, is tight and there are no lines or wrinkles. I don't know her "regime" if any but I suspect its minimal knowing her lifestyle. In comparison, white women of a similar age, that I know, start to show the changes and blemishes at this age or even earlier. My partner's lovely face is certainly going through major changes despite the hours and hundreds if not thousands of dollars worth of lotions and potions.

The black women that I have "stalked"

(mostly in the grocery store) seem to look as fresh. Some even up into their advanced years.

Like everything else I know its really an individual thing but am I just imagining it or is there something to it.

I'm begining to think I have too much time on my hands.

    Cheers,

Based on the individual, this will vary greatly depending on diet, exercise, skin care and other factors.

Now, I do believe that we all know what the sun can do to your skin. It's been my experience that darker skin does not wrinkle as often because of our natural "sun block". LOL. Now, this may be rather ignorant but... LOL

    ^^Amen!! LOL

While we have the extra protection that our added melanin provides, in my family we never cultivated the sun-worshipper lifestyle and that has to count for something. I've seen some brown-skinned folks that have spent too much time in the sun and the damage shows. My mom is 73 and I swear I forget sometimes that she's that age. I truly hope to age as well as she has.

You're very right. Too much sun can definitely be a bad thing - even for the darker shaded women like us.

I dunno. People who touch me, including this Indian woman who threaded my eyebrows once, always say my skin is really, really soft, as if they are surprised by that. There seems to be this stereotype that black people have rough skin and that's just not true (for all of us atleast).

Re: Just wondering about a BW's complexion.

I think it also has to do with lotion. I have always lotioned my skin after bathing. I think over time that plays a role. My sister is married to an american Irishman and he doesnt lotion at all, he doesnt understand why we do. Its funny because ever since my nephews were babies my sister has been lotioning them, my brother in law is just now getting into the habit of doing so. As I said, Im sure that plays into how our skin looks, feels, and ages.

I wondered myself.. every white guy I've been with has ALWAYS commented on how smooth my skin looks and feels (most haven't seen me when I forgot or was too much in a rush to lotion lol) but I think my skin is not all that smooth.. and I started looking more at white women's skin just to compare, and seems a lot have smooth skin.. but of course I haven't touched them lol so maybe looks are decieving.

Black don't crack and beige don't age.

I think the secret is moisturizer. I lotion all over as soon as I get out of the shower. Most white people don't have to worry about being 'ashy.' When I know I will be in the sun, I use Neutrogena SPF 70 Sunblock.

For years the myth was that blacks tanned, but didn't burn. That's a LIE! I have had 2 BAD sunburns in my life. Hence me being uber-careful now.

In April 2011 my cousins wife of only 5 years had a seizure and was rushed to the hospital. They found a brain tumor and operated, this was followed by radiation. She seemed to be on the mend; but in July the tumor came back, in an inoperable location and grew quickly. By mid-October she was dead. Apparently, the cancer started as a melanoma on her toe 3 years ago. She had the cancerous mole removed at that time but it had already metastasized to her brain and lymph-nodes.

OMG! How awful. I'm so sorry for your loss.

We do have to be just as careful as our lighter skinned friends. I live in FL, so I don't mess around. Funny, I'm usually the only black person in the group AND the only person putting on sunscreen and staying in the shade, LOL.

I can't speak for everyone, but I can only speak for me:

    WATER, WATER, WATER!!!

I rarely drink anymore, even sodas, and I quit smoking after doing so since I was 17.

I also use Noxema to cleanse, Neutrogena for breakouts, St. Ives Apricot Scrub to exfoliate, and Ambi scrub to even out my complexion especially if I stay out in the sun too long.

Cetaphil is a kick-ass moisturizer IMHO
