How do you address police brutality with your children?

    As seen on Facebook:

Any Police Officers in the room?

I have a question for those with children: - How do you address police brutality with your children? Especially, those of you that have son(s). Is it wise to tell the kid(s) the police are our friends and they are here to protect us or is it wise to tell them to be leery of the police?

Re: How do you address police brutality with your children?

No kids. But I think it is foolish to tell children to be "leery" or afraid of law enforcement. I have encountered persons who have told they were afraid of the police but couldn't give a reason why other than "that's what we were told". In the end I would like to think that I changed their view to the positive and they were able to form their own opinion.

Re: How do you address police brutality with your children?

I have a different opinion. We have a cop in the family and I know how he and many of his cohorts behave, or I should say misbehave, while the others turn a blind eye. You have to be aware of who and where you are. I am leery of urban cops and rural cops (especially southern since I had a painful experience with two). And even with suburban cops I am distrustful. And if I was black I wouldn't trust any of them any farther than I could throw them. The good certainly outnumber the bad but the blue wall of silence is tall, wide and thick.
Idiots are a dime a dozen and if I ever find the guy supplying the dimes there's going to be a murder!

I agree, Richard. I grew up in a small town where everyone knew each other. The cops were friend with everyone who lived in town and they lived in town. They were not as friendly with outsiders at all! When I moved, I realized that not all police forces are created equally. Jersey has a big problem with its state troopers and racial profiling. As a mother of two young Black men and a young Black lady, I make them aware of the good, the bad and the ugly in this world. Including those who have been placed in such positions of power. The Black voice is not always heard when it comes to injustice. Don't let the news fool you...
